The focus of the teaser of Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju that was released last month was on Sanjay Dutt. The full trailer looks at the other characters in the biopic, including Vicky Kaushal as Dutt’s loyal friend, Manisha Koirala as the actor’s mother Nargis, Paresh Rawal as his father Sunil Dutt, Sonam Kapoor as former girlfriend Tina Munim and Dia Mirza as Manyata Dutt. Yet, all attention is sucked up by Ranbir Kapoor, in the role of a lifetime as an actor who has had a life like few others. Sanju will be released on June 29.
The movie traces the instability and chaos that have marked Sanjay Dutt’s life since his teenage years: his collapse after his mother, the actress Nargis, died of cancer, his addiction to drugs and alcohol, his numerous romantic relationships and flings, and his arrest by the Mumbai police in 1993 for the illegal purchase of arms. “I am not a terrorist,” Dutt’s character asserts.
Anushka Sharma has a small role as a journalist who interviews Dutt after the end of his prison term in 2016. The movie has been co-written by Hirani’s long-time collaborator Abhijat Joshi and shot by Ravi Varman.
