The trailer for Mid90s, Jonah Hill’s directorial debut starring Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges and Jerod Carmichael, was released on Tuesday. With its grainy resolution and narrow aspect ratio compared to the wide-screen movies of today, the coming-of-age comedy-drama is Hill’s tribute to the 1990s. Mid90s will open in the United States of America on October 19.

The trailer shows Suljic as 13-year-old Stevie, who is exploring Los Angeles of the ’90s and is enamoured by the city’s skating culture. Stevie has a lot on his plate as he grapples with an abusive older brother (Hedges) and tries to fit in with the new friends he makes at a skate shop.

Hill has also written the movie. Mid90s has been co-produced by A24, which also backed Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight (2016) and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (2017).

Hill made his acting debut in Greg Mottola’s Superbad (2007) and went on to earn Oscar nominations for his performances in Bennett Miller’s Moneyball (2011) and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).
