The trailer of Academy award-winning director Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma describes the film as a vision of love, courage, hope, change and home. Starting with glimpses of simple, everyday chores and building up to images of rioting and violence, the trailer is replete with intense and poignant moments.
Roma is the Mexican filmmaker’s first movie after the 2013 science-fiction thriller Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Cuaron’s film credits include Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001), Children of Men (2006) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).
The film follows a domestic worker and the family she works for in the middle-class neighbourhood of Roma in Mexico City. According to the official synopsis, “Mother of four, Sofia (Marina de Tavira) copes with the extended absence of her husband, and Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) faces her own devastating news that threatens to distract her from caring for Sofia’s children, whom she loves as her own.”
Roma will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 30 and will also be screened at the San Sebastian, Toronto and New York film Festivals. The film will be released on Netflix and in limited theatres in the United States of America later this year.
