This talented Mumbai dance troupe added desi beats to hip-hop moves and took home third place at the world championships
We're used to watching emotional, stereotypical movies about the hard-luck kids who fight against all odds to take home the prize. Now see the real thing. Kings United, a group of dancers from Mumbai's Nalasopara, beat defending champions Brotherhood from Canada on Sunday night to secure third place at the World Hip Hop Championship in San Diego.
Kings United began by practicing hip-hop and b-boying on the streets of Nalaspoara, after Suresh Mukund, who had helped co-found another prize-winning dance troupe, moved closer to home. Mukund took a few dancers from the original troupe, Fictitious Group – which won India's Got Talent in 2011 and inspired the film ABCD2 – as well as a number of new dancers.
They then set about attempting to compete at a global stage, with more than 50 countries participating in the final competition. "In India, people try to imitate foreign hip hop dancers, but we fused Indian culture with the dance and were appreciated for that," Mukund told DNA after the event. "This is the first time India has reached this far. We will participate again and secure the first position."
