Space always looked different on television. While the Space Shuttle itself, the actual space craft used by American astronauts was very utilitarian and industrial, our TV shows portrayed a world of spacecraft with sleek interiors and command centers all controlled by dashing characters like Captain Kirk. SpaceX, controversial entrepreneur Elon Musk's spacecraft firm, is happy to borrow from that aesthetic.

This newly released footage of Crew Dragon, the capsule that will fit into SpaceX's manned spacecraft, shows interiors that are the sleekest ever seen on a spaceship outside of science fiction. Dragon is meant to be a vehicle to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station, with its first manned flight expected in 2017.

In 2012 SpaceX's Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to "deliver cargo to the International Space Station and safely return to Earth." While the design for Crew Dragon looks intrepid, the final word on it can only come once there is a confirmation that it can launch. Its first manned test flight is expected to take place in 2-3 years, their website says. SpaceX rockets have occasionally failed in the past, with three versions of the Falcon I going down in flames.

For now the description sounds like something you'd want to take out for a spin at night, "Crew Dragon was designed to be an enjoyable ride. With four windows, passengers can take in views of Earth, the Moon, and the wider Solar System right from their seats...".

SpaceX along with Boeing won contracts from America's National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2014 to design space ships to reduce the space agency's reliance on Russia's Soyuz crafts. Boeing's capsule CST 100 is quite sleek looking too, albeit with no corresponding video.

Musk who is the CEO of Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity, is fast gaining celebrity entrepreneur status. He is seen as a pioneer in the field of space travel, with plans for making Mars fit for human habitation and wanting to eventually die there.
