On Wednesday Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg put on a virtual Iron Man mask to announce the social networking giant’s acquisition of face-swapping app Masquerade, known as MSQRD in app stores.

In the video above Zuckerberg tells us, “No, I haven't also built an Iron Man suit. I'm using this app Masquerade that lets you put real time filters on your videos. And today I'm excited to share that the team behind Masquerade is joining Facebook.”

The app also shared Zuckerberg's enthusiasm in a post on their website.

It will also continue to be available as a free and standalone app, news reports said.

Similar to filters available on Facebook's rival Snapchat, the app allows users to put filters on their images, like Zuckerberg did, or swap faces – which is a part funny, part eerie experience. You can swap faces with your friends, animals, celebrities – pretty much anyone with a face.

Or, as the pictures below show, no face needed.

Don't have a companion to swap faces with? The MSQRD app comes with built-in faces that you can use. Vanity Fair put out the video below of the post Oscars party with celebrities swapping faces with Leonardo DiCaprio using the MSQRD app.

When will this be available on Facebook? Soon, possibly, because competitor Snapchat already has a similar feature.

Watch this video of actress Sophie Turner's face swapped with actor Leonardo DiCaprio's, though it's not clear which app was used.
