Suddenly everyone's watching a 2012 Korean sitcom with a character pretending to be Indian
She does not want to be arrested. The ruse does not work.
There are many schemes people use to try and not get fined or arrested by the police. Especially when they know they have broken rules.
High Kick 3: Revenge of the Short Legged, a popular South Korean sitcom that ran from 2011-2012 might have shown the most innovative of these – pretend that you are Indian.
The clip was discovered recently and has promptly gone viral. Two characters on the show are on their way to audition as extras in a commercia. The roles are for an American and an Indian. In their hurry, they take a wrong turn and are stopped by the police and taken to the police station, where they continue the act.
To showcase her desi credentials, the actor playing the Indian is dressed in a red saree, sports some vermilion, and even knows a little Hindi. Three phrases that she repeats over and over: "Main khoobsurat hoon. Mere se shaadi karoge? Namaste. (I am beautiful, will you marry me?)"
The creators of the show do seem to have got their cultural caricatures mixed up though.
In her increasingly absurd attempt to convince the police that she is Indian, the character proceeds to dance to background music that is commonly used as "stock Egyptian" in films and televisions shows around the world.
However, the ruse does not work. The policemen are not convinced.
"Do you think we'll believe that you are Indian if you do all this?"
