“Every day we learn more and understand less.” This means that for US television show host Stephen Colbert there is always fodder for terrifically funny scripts.

When a huge political bombshell dropped on Monday about the American President Donald Trump letting out classified information to high-ranking Russian officials, Colbert found an upside to the whole affair.

“Well, ladies and gentlemen, I’ve got good news, and I got bad news,” Colbert said on his show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “The bad news: The Washington Post reports that Donald Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minster and ambassador. Okay? The good news: Trump found the leaker... It was fast,” Colbert joked.

He went on to examine key details from the story, including the statement that Trump had apparently gone “off-script” in the meeting.

“That is unbelievable,” Colbert said. “Trump had a script?”

“The information is so sensitive that the article can’t describe in detail what was shared, but one official said, ‘This is code-word information,’” Colbert continued. “So, ‘code word’ means the vital aspects of the story have to be replaced with other words. You have to say things like ‘The package has been delivered’. ‘The squirrel is in the basket.’” And then the absolute gem: “’The idiot is in the oval.’ It could mean anything! We don’t know what that means!”

In his defence, Trump has repeatedly said that members of his administration are responsible for leaking news to media outlets, but Colbert, naturally, insists that the biggest leaker is the president himself.
