Watch the sheer joy of dogs riding the waves at a surfing contest
Human surfers couldn’t possibly have performed so well.
Forty dogs hit the sea as California’s Surf City hosted its 9th Annual McKenna Subaru Surf City Surf Dog competition. Dozens of dogs and thousands of people from all over Southern California flocked to Huntington Beach to see the dogs riding the waves on their surfboards.
Dogs wearing life jackets, accompanied by their owners, were given ten minutes to surf the waves and catch as many waves as possible. The pawticipants were judged on how long they rode the waves, the difficulty of the ride, and on their style and overall ability.
While some of the surfers were accompanied by their humans or other dogs in the tandem categories, the four-legged surfers braced the waves – one to three feet high – on their own in the other categories, which were divided according to their weight and skill level.
