Watch: At a local wrestling match in Chhattisgarh, BJP MP uses a sexist, derogatory term for women
Opposition politicians are demanding action against the minister.
While addressing an audience at a local wrestling match in Korba, Chhattisgarh, a BJP MP made a deplorably sexist remark. The video (above) shows MP Banshilal Mahto describing the state’s girls as “tana tan”, a colloquial term which degrades women.
The BJP leader is heard saying in the video: “People often take it in jest, but Bhaiyalal Rajwade [the state’s sports minister] has been heard saying that turis from Korba and Chhattisgarh’s girls have become tana tan.”
Opposition parties are demanding action against Mahto. Congress leader TS Singh Deo even asked for legal action against him: “This is disrespect for women and shows the mentality of the MP.”
Janata Congress Chhattisgarh vice-president Amit Jogi said: “Our women’s wing has launched a campaign against Mahto. He should apologise and his party should publicly chastise him. If not, we will be compelled to lodge an FIR against him and see that he is prosecuted for demeaning women.”
