There are many ways to skin a cat. Turns out there are many ways to get a slice of cake too. There’s the easy route – and then there’s Joseph Herscher’s way, involving a complex and mostly useless machine for a simple task.

The New Zealand-born YouTuber, who lives in Brooklyn, New York, runs the YouTube channel Joseph’s Machines, and calls himself an “inventor of useless machines”. The cake server in the video above is apparently the most complex machine he has made till date. If you watch the video, you’ll believe him immediately.

Known as a Rube Goldberg machine (after the man who first came up with the concept) Herscher’s version is especially complex. It took him three months to build it. But in the end, he got to have his cake and eat it too.

The video below shows what went on behind the scenes.
