Watch: Haniya Aslam makes a comeback to Coke Studio with a feminist anthem
The renowned Pakistani singer performed the song ‘Main Irada’ on the programme.
Coke Studio’s running season has tipped its hat to feminism with Main Irada, featuring Haniya Aslam, Shamu Bai, Rachel Viccaji, and Pareek duo Ariana and Amrina. The song celebrates #GirlLove and asks resilient women across the world to never give up on their dreams.
The message is conveyed with lyrics like “Now we must do something, that the world will cry and we can laugh”, and “I am a blessing, I am a woman”. While those translations may not be high on literary value, the original Urdu lines are powerful enough for the song to be remembered.
Aslam’s first album was Chup!, which she released in 2008, along with her cousin Zebunnisa Bangash. She has released several songs since then.
