A combination of treacherous terrain and torrential rain often makes the North-Eastern states of India particularly susceptible to floods and destruction. This year, too, the states of Nagaland, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been severely hit, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that there is more to come.
The havoc is widespread, as videos posted on social media reveal.

In Assam, parts of villages have been swept away, forcing people to escape to ill-equipped shelters.
In Guwahati, the capital of Assam, many local businesses had to be shut down because of flooded roads. Communication was cut in various parts of the state, making emergency rescues difficult. People have been forced to set up roadside camps on highways where the water level is still low.

Floods in Arunachal Pradesh seem imminent as the Siang river has swollen to dangerous levels. China is believed to have initiated heavy water discharge from its dams across the border, the highest in 50 years.
