These 14-year-old girls from Bangalore just won an award for an app that helps you sell your garbage
On June 28, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was urging the nation to save and educate girl child, thousands of miles away in San Francisco, five girls from Bangalore had already made India proud at a global pitch event. Sanjana Vasanth, N. Anupama, Mahima Mehendale, Swasthi P. Rao and B. Navyashree, all aged 14, took part in the Technovation challenge, a global competition for innovative girls.
The five from Bangalore used the forum to debut their app, Sellixo which provides an online marketplace to buy and sell dry waste. Their app, which caters to dry waste producers like small shopkeepers, dry waste collectors, recycling agencies and others, bagged the first prize at the competition, including winnings of $10,000, beating out 400 other teams from 64 nations.
The girls competed under the team name Pentechan and pitched their idea to top female technology executives in the challenge organized by the Adobe Foundation, CA Technologies, Google, Verizon, United Nations Women, UNESCO and MIT Media Lab. Pentechan took six months to train the girls for better business planning and program design under the mentorship of the Goldman Sachs Foundation.
