Delhi's Patiala court on Tuesday dismissed a petition that called for Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani to be summoned in connection with a case related to her educational qualification. The court had earlier directed the Delhi Election Commission to submit documents related to her degrees. Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh had noted that the matter needed some clarity and had asked the poll panel to furnish the records Irani had submitted to it before contesting the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, PTI reported.

Freelance writer Ahmed Khan had filed a case against the former human resource development minister in 2015, claiming that the information on the degrees she had provided before the 2004 Lok Sabha elections differed from her 2011 Rajya Sabha nomination papers in Gujarat. The documents from 2004 say Irani has a BA degree from Delhi University (school of correspondence), while those from 2011 show that her highest educational qualification was BCom Part 1 (correspondence course) from DU, according to Khan's lawyer.

A poll panel official had earlier told the court that the documents were not traceable, however, they were available on its website. The Delhi University had also informed the court that the documents pertaining to Irani’s degrees were not available with it.
