The lawyer Uday Lalit, who has represented new BJP party president Amit Shah, and was also the special prosecutor in the 2G spectrum allocation case, has been made a Supreme Court judge. Lalit takes the spot that Gopal Subramaniam contentiously withdrew his candidature from.

India’s budget expected to boost growth
Finance minister Arun Jaitley unveiled a budget in Parliament yesterday that he vows will lift economic growth to 7 to 8 per cent in three years, by increasing investment, improving infrastructure and reviving manufacturing.

The veteran Indian cinema star Zohra Sehgal passed away at 4pm on Thursday at a hospital in New Delhi. Her career spanned almost eight decades, and included memorable performances in theatre, television, Bollywood and Hollywood films.

As rockets were fired by the Israeli government and Hamas at civilian populations on either side for the fourth day in a row, the situation shows no sign of immediate resolution. Reports said Israel is planning a ground invasion of Gaza.
