As the Israeli offensive against the blockaded Gaza strip enters its fourth week, the violence shows no sign of abatement. Since July 7, the Palestinian death toll has passed 1000, with a great many civilian deaths. Public outrage against the atrocities carried out by the Israel Defence Forces on the Palestinian people has taken various forms, and social media has played a huge role. A growing number of musicians, actors and other artists have come forward to express solidarity with the Palestinian cause and condemn the IDF’s activities.

Boycott Israel
In this hip-hop track, rappers from across the world, including Immortal Technique, Don Martin, El Tipo Este of Cuban duo Obsesion, Parisian rapper Tonto Noiza, and Johannesburg-based Tumi Molekane call for a boycott of Israel, each rapping in their native tongue. As Immortal Technique raps, “This ain't about religion, Muslim, Jew or Christian. It's about people making money off that division.” The track ends with an excerpt from writer Arundhati Roy’s speech, Come September.

#GazaNames Project
The video released by Freedom4Palestine.org features artists, authors, actors and activists showing their support for Palestine. They are shown holding up a placard bearing the name and age of a series of Palestinian civilians killed in the fighting.

#JewsAndArabsRefuseToBeEnemies
Call it hashtag activism, but this is one among the many social media campaigns that has gained a huge following, as Twitter users around the globe have posted photographs of Jews and Arabs together.
