Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano system has been experiencing heightened seismic activity since mid-August. Since fissures appeared a couple of days ago, the Icelandic Met Office estimates that lava has been streaming at 1,000 cubic meters per second.
Unlike in 2010, when the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland grounded planes for six days, Bardarbunga has not released much ash into the atmosphere.
Bardarbunga, at 2,000 metres, is Iceland’s second-highest peak and is buried under Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajoekull.
