Despite drop in inflation, RBI unlikely to cut interest rates
Retail inflation in India dropped to a three-year low of 6.46% in September, according to government data released on Monday. Retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index or changes in the price level of a basket of good and services purchased by households, dropped to 6.46% from 7.73% in August. The drop in inflation has been credited to a fall in food prices thanks to increased rainfall in the final stages of a patchy monsoon, besides a reduction in global crude oil rates. Despite providing some succor to the consumer, the Reserve Bank of India is unlikely to reduce interest rates.

SEBI debars DLF and six of its executives from participating in market for three years
The Securities and Exchange Board of India on Monday debarred real-estate giant DLF and six of its top executives, including chairman KP Singh, from entering the capital market for three years. The penalty imposed due to the lack of disclosure in DLF's Initial Public Offering prospectus to potential shareholders, in 2007. In its order, SEBI stated that DLF and its directors, including chairman KP Singh, his son Rajiv and daughter Pia, were guilty of "active and deliberate suppression" of information at the time of its public offering.

Congress high command drops Shashi Tharoor as party spokesperson
The Congress party high command on Monday dropped Shashi Tharoor from its roster of official spokespersons, for accepting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to advocate his "Swach Bharat" or "Clean India" campaign. The decision to drop the Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram was based on a complaint filed by the Kerala unit of the Congress party that sought disciplinary action against him for supporting Modi's initiative.

Massive relief efforts in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha were underway on Monday to restore communication and power links, besides clearing the roads that were battered by cyclone Hudhud. The toll, meanwhile, rose to 17 in both states, according to figures released by the Centre, though unofficially it stands at 21. The key port city of Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh has been without electricity and communication links since Saturday night, besides suffering extensive damage to its infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the city on Tuesday to oversee relief operations.

'Love jihad victim' in Meerut retracts allegations of forced religious conversion
The victim of so-called love jihad in Meerut retracted her statement on Sunday, admitting that she had eloped with her Muslim partner and willingly converted to Islam. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its right-wing associates have been claiming that Muslim men are conducting a so-called love jihad to woo Hindu women in order to convert them to Islam. The woman had filed a complaint of forced conversion against 10 men, including her partner, on August 2. In her latest statement to the police, however, the victim said that she was forced by her family to file the complaint. The victim's family, meanwhile, has rejected her latest stateent.
