As both major election alliances in Maharashtra crumbled before the October 15 assembly elections, the campaign trail resembled a blood arena. Five parties went at each other with some vigour: the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Shiv Sena, the Congress and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
When results are announced on October 19, the Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to be the single largest group in the assembly, though many exit polls suggested that it would fall short of a majority.
In Haryana too, the BJP's decision to go it alone, breaking its earlier alliance, caused a particularly heated campaign.
