Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi on Wednesday evening and discussed the possibility of Delhi being granted full statehood. Earlier in the day, Kejriwal met Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu to discuss land for schools, parking spaces and women's safety. He invited both the ministers for his swearing-in ceremony on February 14 at Ramlila ground. He will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday morning and invite him too for the swearing-in ceremony.
Patna High Court stops Nitish Kumar’s return to power
The Patna High Court on Wednesday acted on a petition by MLA Rajeshwar Raj, a supporter of Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, and stayed the election of Nitish Kumar as the leader of JD(U) legislature party. Raj has raised two questions: whether a new leader of the legislature party could be elected while the incumbent is still in his post; and whether the governor is obliged to accept such an election. The matter will be heard on February 17. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar landed in Delhi on Wednesday with 130 MLAs to meet President Pranab Mukherjee and to urge governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to break the political crisis in Bihar.
Sahara deal with Mirach falls apart
Sahara felt yet another jolt as its $2.05 billion deal with Mirach Capital Group fell apart. Mirach had agreed to loan the struggling Indian group the money so that it can bail out its founder, Subrato Roy, who has been jailed for failing to repay thousands of small investors. But Mirach in a statement on Wednesday said it had returned the due diligence fee of $2.625 million, ending the deal. After this, the Supreme Court asked Sahara for fresh suggestions about monetising its properties.
300 migrants feared dead on Mediterranean Sea
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said on Wednesday that at least 300 migrants are missing and feared dead while making their way from Libya to Italy in stormy weather across the Mediterranean Sea. According to the nine survivors rescued by an Italian tugboat, another vessel with 100 migrants is still missing.
216 swine flu deaths in 10 days: Health Ministry
At least 216 people across India have died of swine flu in the first 10 days of February, taking the total number of deaths from the disease to 407 this year, health ministry officials said. Gujarat and Rajasthan are the worst affected states. er, the number of cases detected this year stands at 5,157. "To enhance the level of preparedness, additional 60,000 Oseltamivir medicines and 10,000 N-95 masks are being procured,” said the health ministry.
