The Big Story: Kejriwal is not done picking battles
Most politicians complain about a "media trial". Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wants to turn the concept on its head. On Sunday he called on people to hold a "public trial" of the media, claiming that those in the press are out to get the Aam Aadmi Party. Claiming all the stories about his party are part of a "big conspiracy" to finish off AAP, Kejriwal said instead that there should be a collection of erroneous clips of television journalism that would allow bad reporters to be named and shamed.
This wouldn't be a bad idea actually, if not for AAP's previous relationship with the press. The party came to prominence and power partly on its ability to stay relevant in the news. It is also stuffed with several journalists. Yet in both its stints in power, and in-between, Kejriwal has shown a tendency to blame the media whenever convenient.
A media conspiracy however, can't explain away the latest conspiracies engulfing AAP, including Delhi's Lt Governor Najeeb Jung clarifying to the chief minister that he is the final authority when it comes to executive action. Kejriwal had earier sent an order to all departments asking them not to "bother the office" of the Lt Governor with files. Jung's response asks the chief minister's office to withdraw this order.
