Bihar: OBCs get lion’s share of seats
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday released his Grand Alliance's joint list of 242 candidates for the upcoming state assembly polls. The bulk of candidates are from the Other Backward Class and backward caste groups. Kumar's Janata Dal (United) is fighting the polls along with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress. Its main challenger is the National Democracy Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Maharashtra: Death demanded for eight in 7/11 attacks
The prosecution in the 2006 Mumbai serial train blasts case on Wednesday demanded the death sentence for eight convicts, and life imprisonment for four others. On Tuesday, the defence lawyers, winding up their arguments on the quantum of punishment, had pleaded that none of the convicts be given the death sentence, because according to the prosecution’s own case they were mere foot soldiers and not the masterminds. Earlier this month, Judge Yatin Shinde convicted 12 accused while acquitting one person.

Rajasthan: Three Pakistani boys to be sent home
Three Pakistani boys, who were held by Border Security Force near the Jaisalmer border in Rajasthan after they crossed into the Indian territory, will be sent back to their country, an official said on Wednesday. The boys said they crossed the border while searching for their missing cattle.

Karnataka: Writer booked for hurting religious sentiments
An FIR has been registered against Kannada writer KS Bhagwan, who has received death threats from fringe rightwing oufits, for allegedly hurting religious feelings. The police said the FIR was filed at a police station in Dakshina Kannada district after a speech by the writer at a function in Bangalore. On Tuesday, a hostel warden was held for making threatening calls to the Karnataka Sahitya Academy for choosing Bhagwan for a lifetime achievement award in 2013.

Tamil Nadu: Jaya writes to PM on detained fishermen 
Two days after 15 fishermen from Nagapattinam were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to secure their release. The fishermen on two boats from Nagapattinam were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy on September 21 and taken to Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka.
