The Shiv Sena on Wednesday accused actor Aamir Khan of “speaking the language of treachery” for his comments on the rising intolerance and his wife Kiran Rao’s concerns about living in the country. In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, the Sena referenced his character in 3 Idiots, saying “This Ranchhoddas should explain which country he is going to live in,” PTI reported. According to the Sena, speaking of leaving the country amounts to treachery. The party also attacked Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan for making similar statements, saying the “Khan clan” should explain to people “what calamity has befallen them”.

The Sena's remarks were among a chorus of people criticising Aamir Khan, even as several others including musician AR Rahman appeared to support him. Rahman said that he was all for non-violent protests, given that India was the country of Mahatma Gandhi, Times Now reported. The intolerance issue is likely to be raised by the opposition at the winter session of Parliament, which begins on Thursday. A sedition case was filed against Khan in a Kanpur court on Wednesday afternoon, the Times of India reported. According to the Hindustan Times, the actor asked Rao and their children to leave the city for a few days till the furore dies down.

On Tuesday, Sena's Maharashtra ally Bharatiya Janata Party, among others, had also slammed Khan’s statements, saying they were “politically motivated”, alarmist and unfair. The Congress had expressed support for the actor. At an event in Delhi on Monday, Khan had said that he felt alarmed by recent incidences of intolerance, and that his wife Kiran Rao had even asked whether they should leave the country.
