Three attackers were among the nine people left dead after Afghan security forces ended the siege by the Taliban at the Spanish embassy in Kabul on Saturday. Gunfire and explosions could be heard through the night, Reuters reported. Kabul police spokesperson Basir Mujahid said two foreigners and four Afghan police officers were killed. Nine other Afghan civilians were injured and 47 people were rescued from nearby buildings as security forces sealed the area around the guest house where the attack took place.

The siege began on Friday evening, after a suicide attacker detonated a car bomb near the guest house. Three gunmen ran in and opened fire on the security forces. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, and on Saturday released a statement taunting the government, saying it was a “disgrace” that they had not been able to prevent it.
