AB Bardhan, a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India, passed away in New Delhi on Saturday evening. He was 92.

Bardhan had been in hospital after suffering a paralytic stroke in December and his condition had become "very critical" earlier on Saturday, said CPI national secretary D Raja.

His death was mourned by several political leaders including West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who expressed their condolences on Twitter.

Bardhan was prominent figure in Left politics in Maharashtra, where he had contested and won as an Independent candidate in the 1957 assembly elections. He later rose to become the General Secretary and then President of All India Trade Union Congress, the oldest trade union in India.

Bardhan had moved to central politics in the 1990s and became the Deputy General Secretary of the Communist Party of India.
