Ola Cabs on Sunday fired a driver who reportedly raped a woman passenger in Bhopal on December 29, and issued a statement distancing itself from him. The statement said that the driver “was not logged onto the Ola platform” when the incident took place, and added that he had been fired immediately.
The driver raped a 28-year-old woman passenger who was on her way home from work on December 29, and reportedly threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the crime. The accused, Deepak Bamane, has been arrested.
Womens’ rights activist Abha Singh on Sunday hit out at app-based agencies, and said that the companies running such apps are not concerned about the safety of women passengers. Last month, a former Uber cab driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav was given life imprisonment for raping a woman passenger in December 2014.
