The ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance on Wednesday presented a Rs 37,052-crore budget for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, India's richest civic body. The budget for 2016-17 is 10.5% higher than the previous year's Rs 33,519.15 crore allocation.

Civic Commissioner Ajoy Mehta, who tabled the budget, proposed to convert all street lights to LED, improve the ease of doing business, impose a property tax on lump-sum basis on slum hutments, fill up over 830 civic posts in three years, set up a science laboratory and hygienic toilets, and develop 30 gardens in the city. He also suggested re-examining medical charges for patients coming to Mumbai for treatment from other cities.

The new budget also increased the rate of octroi on crude oil from 3% to 4.5 %, earmarked Rs 12,874 crore for infrastructure projects and set aside Rs 3,693 crore to improve healthcare services. The budget, however, did not make any provision for constructing a memorial of the late Bal Thackeray, founder of the Shiv Sena. Mehta said the issue is being discussed at the state-level.
