Police on Monday detained three persons in connection with the death of an eight-year-old boy during celebratory firing by Samajwadi Party workers in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli city on Sunday, reported dna. Party workers had opened fire to celebrate the win of candidate Nafisa in the local elections when the child, who was passing in an autorickshaw, was hit by a stray bullet. NDTV reported that the boy was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to his injury on arrival.

The boy’s relatives blocked the Panipat-Khatima highway after his death. Police tried to reason with them and assured them of strict action against the culprits, but the blockade was not lifted. Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan said, “Those who were firing indiscriminately in the victory procession will be identified, and strict action will be taken against them.” The situation continued to be tense, and a large police force was deployed in the Kairana area of Shamli, The Times of India reported. Three people were reportedly detained for the boy's death on Monday afternoon.

The Bharatiya Janata Party came down strongly on the ruling party in the state, saying such things were bound to happen when a "party of goons" was in power, ANI reported. BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh said, "When you appoint goons, it results in jungle raj. When they win, they fire gun shots, and unfortunately, a child is killed."
