An Uber driver was arrested early on Sunday on suspicion of shooting dead six people in Kalamazoo County in the northern state of Michigan in the United States. The ride-sharing company confirmed that 45-year-old Jason Brian Dalton was a driver for them, adding that he had passed a background check and had no criminal record, AFP reported. Chief Security Officer of Uber Joe Sullivan said in a statement that they had reached out to the police to help with their investigation.

Dalton is believed to be the gunman who opened fire at three different locations in Kalamazoo County on Saturday. Six people were killed and two others were seriously wounded. His shooting spree began at 6pm local time, when he fired four rounds at a woman, who was with her children at the time, in the parking lot of an apartment complex. At 10pm local time, he shot two people to death at a car dealership. Around 10 to 15 minutes later, a few miles away from the dealership, he shot at four other victims outside Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Local resident Matt Mellen, who was Dalton’s passenger a few hours before the incidents began, said his ride with him was terrifying. “We were driving through medians, driving through the lawn, speeding along, and when we came to a stop, I jumped out of the car and ran away,” he said, adding that he called emergency helpline 911 around 4.30pm. His fiancee posted Dalton’s photograph on Facebook to warn others after he told her what had happened.

Dalton will face murder charges in court on Monday, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said. He added that there was “no reason to believe” more than one person was involved, and that footage from the car dealership and the restaurant helped police identify Dalton’s car. Police seized a semi-automatic handgun and other evidence from the car, the prosecutor said.
