Chhattisgarh police on Saturday arrested another journalist, Deepak Jaiswal, who works for Hindi daily Daindini. This comes soon after the arrest of journalist Prabhat Singh, who was held for allegedly circulating defamatory material against local police and a local group, Samajik Ekta Manch, on WhatsApp. Singh’s bail application was rejected on Saturday, said Isha Khandelwal, member of Jagdalpur Legal Aid Group. Jaiswal was arrested in connection with a case registered against him and Singh seven months ago by the principal of a school in Geedam.

Jaiswal and Singh had written a report on teachers at the school helping students cheat in their examinations. The charges against the two journalists in the case include trespassing, obstructing public servant from discharging their duty, and assault against a public servant. The complaint filed claimed the two men had entered the school without the principal’s permission, manhandled staff and demanded money from them.

Hindustan Times reported that this is the fourth journalist to be arrested in the region in the last six months. Bastar police recently harassed Scroll.in journalist Malini Subramaniam, who was then forced to leave Chhattisgarh. Aam Aadmi Party activist Soni Sori was also recently attacked in the district.
