Delhi Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the death of a 23-year-old Congolese man on Friday night. The man was reportedly beaten to death by a group of people in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. The victim, MT Olivia, got into an argument with a group of locals around 11.45 pm, after which the men attacked him violently with bricks and stones, reported PTI. Olivia taught foreign languages at a private institute in the capital. The Embassy of Congo has been informed about the incident.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Nupur Prasad told PTI that a case of murder had been registered and that police were checking CCTV footage to identify the attackers. They have not found out what the argument was about or what led to Olivia’s murder. Police are investigating all possible theories including robbery and racism.

Earlier this year, a Tanzanian woman was stripped and violently beaten by a mob in Bengaluru after she was thought to have been responsible for a local woman’s death. The incident snowballed into a controversy as the state government denied it was because of racism, and local police allegedly did not file a case in the matter for four days. Locals in Bengaluru had protested the violence (pictured above) and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had condemned the incident.
