21 security personnel injured in Kashmir after protests break out amidst Eid celebrations
The police had put several separatist leaders under house arrest, after which locals agitated by throwing stones and complained of unprovoked tear gas shelling.
At least 21 security personnel were injured in the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday, after locals and police forces got involved in clashes amidst Eid celebrations. According to The Hindu, Srinagar, Sopore and Anantnag were the cities affected by the violent exchanges. The police said the citizens raised separatist slogans and pelted stones, but the former argued that security agency officers used tear gas to quell a peaceful protest and also damaged public property.
Authorities had earlier put high-profile separatist leaders like Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik under house arrest to avoid unrest during Eid prayers. "The PDP-BJP government has crossed all limits as women devotees were injured in the action by the security forces," Farooq said.
