United State President Barack Obama on Wednesday addressed the Democratic party convention and hailed Hillary Clinton, calling her the only candidate with the right credentials to be the country’s next leader. Obama said, “There has never been a man or a woman, not me, not Bill (Clinton), as qualified as Hillary to lead the US,” he said.

Obama added that, “America is already great. Its greatness does not depend on Donald Trump. We do not need a self-declared saviour… And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump.” Trump, while accepting the Republican party’s presidential nomination had promised to “restore law and order” if elected. About Trump’s address, Obama said, “What we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, and turn away from the rest of the world. There were no serious solutions to pressing problems – just the fanning of resentment, and blame, and anger, and hate.”

Obama had fought Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination eight years ago and won. He appointed her secretary of state four years ago.

Earlier at the convention, Clinton’s vice-presidential pick Tim Kaine accepted his nomination. On Tuesday, Clinton won the party’s nomination to run for president, making her the first woman to have done so.
