At least 13 civilians were killed and 18 others injured on Friday after three militants opened fire at a busy market area near Assam's Kokrajhar town. One militant was reportedly shot dead during the gun battle with security forces, while the others are on the run, according to ANI.

Although Assam Director-General of Police Mukesh Sahay could not confirm the number of militants, he said the police suspected the involvement of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland. Grenades and other weapons were recovered from the terrorist who was shot, Sahay added. Combing operations are underway.

The incident took place at the crowded Tenali Market 8 km from Kokrajhar, around 220 km west of the state's commercial capital Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh on the issue. He announced that the victims will be given Rs 5 lakh compensation and those injured will receive Rs 1 lakh. Sonowal said, "Our government will take stern action against these extremist outfits."

Additional security forces were rushed to the location after news of the attack emerged. Specialised troops, tracker dogs and special equipment have been deployed to carry out combing operations. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said the victims will receive proper care. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Sonowal to discuss the attack. Indian Army jawans are on standby and will be called in if required.
