Man shot at by police during protest against Milwaukee shooting in US
This comes a day after riot and arson were reported from the neighbourhood following the death of a 23-year-old African-American by an officer.
A man was reportedly shot on Sunday during protests carried out against the Milwaukee administration in the United States after a local was fatally shot by a police officer in the area on Saturday, reported Reuters. The city police said their officer fired a shot to disperse the crowd when the protestors started rioting. The injured man was taken to hospital. It is not clear yet whether the injured man was a protestor or a bystander.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (pictured above) activated the National Guard to avoid any further incidents. Following the news of the death of 23-year-old Sylville K Smith, angry residents set afire six businesses and damaged police cars. Gunshots were also reported from the area on Saturday night. The police detained seventeen people for their connection to the arson. Several police officers also sustained injuries in the exchange.
Investigators said Smith had a long record of criminal activities and claimed he was shot at when he tried to run away after an officer stopped his car. Investigators also said he was armed when he tried to flee from the police officer, according to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
