British Labour MP Keith Vaz on Tuesday stepped down from his post as the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee following media reports that he paid for the services of two male escorts, reported BBC. Announcing his decision, he 60-year-old said "It is in the best interest of the Home Affairs Select Committee that its important work can be conducted without any distractions whatsoever. I am genuinely sorry that recent events make it impossible for this to happen if I remain chair." His successor will be chosen in the next few weeks.

The Sunday Mirror published an exposé on September 4 that showed Vaz with male escorts in an apartment in north London. The senior leader was also reportedly heard talking about illegal drugs. Reacting to the scandal, British Prime Minister Theresa May said the public must have confidence in their political representatives, reported The Guardian. May said, "What has been clear throughout my political career and what is important for people is that they feel they are able to have confidence in their politicians, and that is what we have a duty to apply for those who elect us." She said what Vaz must reconsider his position if the general public is losing their confidence in him.
