A 21-year-old woman in Burari, North Delhi, was stabbed to death on Tuesday morning, IANS reported. Police said the victim, a teacher, was stabbed at least 22 times in full view of bystanders while she was on her way to school. She was declared brought dead at a trauma centre in Civil Lines area, while the accused was reportedly chased down and beaten by some witnesses after he committed the act.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma said, “The woman was stabbed publicly in Burari area at 9 am by Surender Singh, 34, who was known to her. No one came to her rescue.” Police said Singh is a store owner who has divorce proceedings going on in court. Verma said, "The assailant had been troubling the woman since a year or so. The family had lodged a complaint four-five months ago and both the families had reached a compromise.”

According to an NDTV report, closed-circuit television camera footage shows the accused reaching for a stone to bash her head, while passersby stared in horror but did not step in to help her. This is reportedly the second incident in two days in Delhi where a woman was killed in public.

Meanwhile, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the Delhi Police needed to "focus" on ensuring the safety of the public instead of "harassing" legislators from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, PTI reported. Eleven MLAs from the party have been arrested since it came to power in February last year.
