President, vice president's salaries to increase by more than 200%
The Centre reportedly wants to fix the pay scale after the 7th pay commission reforms pushed the remuneration for many top bureaucrats higher than theirs.
President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari's salaries are likely to more than triple, according to a new proposal approved by the Cabinet, PTI reported on Tuesday. While Mukherjee's monthly salary is expected to go from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh, Ansari's will increase from Rs 1.1 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh.
The move is believed to be an effort to correct the pay scale in the Union Executive, after the seventh pay commission pushed the salaries of several top bureaucrats above the president and vice president's remuneration. A cabinet secretary currently earns Rs 2.5 lakh a month, while an additional secretary gets around Rs 1.8 lakh.
The Centre is expected to put the proposal before the Parliament in the upcoming winter session, the TV channel reported. There has been no official communication on the matter yet.
