A government school building was set on fire in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Sunday. A major portion of the structure was damaged in the blaze, according to ANI. Residents of Aishmuqam village in the South Kashmir district detected the fire at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, and police said they were able to douse the flames quickly, IANS reported.

Security patrols around educational institutions were stepped up in Kashmir after it was reported on October 25 that three schools were set on fire in 24 hours. The school in Anantnag is the 25th in the state to be set ablaze since the unrest in the Kashmir Valley began after Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed on July 8. The protests in the state have affected the education system in the Valley, with most of the institutes targeted being government-run.

Authorities said they had identified the arsonists who were setting schools on fire as part of a conspiracy, according to IANS. Half of the schools that were set on fire are in South Kashmir, which saw some of the most violent clashes in the past months.
