Bollywood actor Aamir Khan on Saturday backed the Centre’s decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, saying citizens must do what is required for the country’s well-being. Khan was speaking at the music launch of his upcoming film Dangal, when he suggested that the government’s claims that the move would reduce black money in the economy were well-founded.

“I think these issues that are concerning our country are more important,” Khan said. “We shouldn’t see the short-term impact of it. Even if it [demonetisation] causes a loss to my film, I will see it as a small thing,” he added, according to The Indian Express.

Khan has not always been as vocal in his support of the Centre’s policies, coming in for severe criticism in 2015 after he suggested that he was concerned about religious intolerance in the country. While speaking at an award function, Khan had said that his wife worried that India was no longer a safe place to live, purportedly referring to the discussion on religious minorities being persecuted in the aftermath of the Dadri lynching. He was subsequently dropped as the ambassador of the Tourism Ministry’s Incredible India campaign.
