Opposition leaders met on Monday to discuss strategy for the month-long Parliament Session that begins on Wednesday, The Indian Express reported. Parties are expected to take up the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in both houses of Parliament, among other topics.

Several Opposition leaders have criticised the move and the inconvenience it has caused people, though the Centre remains firm that the decision will root out corruption in the long-run. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies, and reportedly asked legislators not to be defensive about the demonetisation move.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had also called an all party meet on Monday, to exhort the Opposition to work with the BJP and not derail Parliament proceedings. However, notices have already been given to discuss demonetisation and the ongoing unrest in Kashmir in the Houses. The Winter Session in 2015 was riddled with adjournments as the Opposition were up in arms after Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were named in the National Herald case.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government is facing flak from several parties for the demonetisation of the notes. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged that Modi had warned his aides before making the announcement, so that they could deposit their unaccounted money. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has attacked the Centre over the move, along with the Kerala Congress, Rahul Gandhi, and many others.

The BJP for its part has remained firm in its belief that the move will be an inconvenience for the public but that it will help oust black money and corruption in India. Modi has appealed to the public a number of times for their cooperation, as well as thanked them for their support and for waiting hours to exchange their demonetised notes at banks.
