89 Lok Sabha seats up for grabs in seventh phase of elections
All the constituencies of Gujarat and Punjab, along with seats in five other states and two Union Territories, go to the polls in the seventh phase of elections today. State assembly elections will also take place in Telangana, along with parliamentary elections in 17 constituencies of the newly formed state. Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will be fighting from Vadodara in Gujurat while Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be seeking re-election from the Gandhi "home constituency" of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. Other political bigwigs involved today are LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Amarinder Singh and K Chandrasekhar Rao. Eighty nine Lok Sabha seats are up for grabs today.
Modi's remarks invoking Kargil hero's slogan causes row
Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Tuesday sparked a row after invoking a Kargil martyr's war slogan while asking people to grant the BJP-fronted National Democratic Alliance 300 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Modi was addressing a rally in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, when he used Captain Vikram Batra's well-known slogan "Yeh dil maange more". Modi's comments were met with much criticism from Captain Batra's parents as well as from other parties for politicising a hero's death.
Centre reveals names of 18 account holders with black money in Lichtenstein Bank
After more than three years of resisting, the Centre finally submitted the names of 18 people who held accounts with black money deposited at the LGT Bank in Lichtenstein to the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The Centre had been directed by the apex court in 2011 to reveal the names of individuals involved in tax evasion, among other things, after receiving the data related to the identity of the account holders from German authorities in 2009.
BCCI says Mudgal panel findings 'baseless', seeks new panel
The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Tuesday opposed the Supreme Court’s decision to request the Justice Mukul Mudgal panel to continue with its investigations in the Indian Premier League corruption case. The BCCI suggested that the recently-made allegations against former president N Srinivasan and 12 others were "baseless" and "erroneous". The BCCI requested for the constitution of a new panel and also asked for the reinstatement of N Srinivasan as board president while the investigations were being conducted.
Nokia appoints Rajeev Suri as CEO
Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia appointed India-born Rajeev Suri as its chief executive officer on Tuesday. Suri, 46, is known for turning around Nokia’s ailing primary networking business and has been associated with the company since 1995. Suri, who describes himself as an "international citizen", was born in India, raised in Kuwait, studied electronics and telecommunications engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka, and has worked in India, Finland, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Nigeria. His appointment sent the company's share price up by more than 7% on the Helsinki stock exchange.
