Corruption by judges is being ignored, says Katju
After alleging last month that three former chief justices had overlooked complaints to appoint a corrupt judge to the Madras High Court, former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju in a blog post on Sunday cited two instances in which accusations against judges had been ignored by former Chief Justices of India, Justice RC Lahoti and SH Kapadia. He said that these allegations were being brushed under the carpet in order to avoid defaming the judiciary.

Modi to review all bilateral agreements
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought a review of all bilateral agreements signed by the previous United Progressive Alliance regime since 2004, according to a Hindustan Times report. Modi will assess whether these agreements were implemented or if they still remain on paper. Ministries have been asked to submit their reports to the Prime Minister's Office this week.

Jaitley agrees with Rajan on need to target inflation
Despite pressures to spur immediate economic growth, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has backed the Reserve Bank of India chairman, Raghuram Rajan's bid to keep key rates unchanged in the face of rising inflation. At the meeting between Jaitley and the RBI board of governors on Sunday, they agreed on an “acceptable path of inflation targeting”, with the final call on rate changes to be taken by the central bank. RBI aims to reduce inflation to 6% by January, 2016, from 7.31% in June.

Islamic State militants execute 500 Yazidis
Islamic State militants have allegedly executed at least 500 Yazidis in northern Iraq, according to a Reuters report. Yazidis are a Kurdish-speaking minority community in northern Iraq who are being intensely persecuted by the Sunni militant outfit.  In addition, an Iraqi minister claimed that Yazidi women are being kept as slaves after IS militants seized the town of Sinjar. Meanwhile, US warplanes continue to bombard IS targets near Erbil, the capital of the autonomous Kurdistan province.

Smriti Irani claims  she has a degree from Yale
Union Human Resource Development Minister, Smriti Irani, has sparked yet another controversy over her educational qualifications by claiming that she has a degree from the prestigious Yale University. At the India Today Woman Summit 2014, Irani responded to questions over her qualifications, by saying, “In that kitty of mine where people call me ‘anpad' (illiterate), I do have a degree from Yale University as well which I can bring out and show how Yale celebrated my leadership capacities." A few months ago, Irani found herself in the eye of a controversy after she made contradictory claims in affidavits she submitted to the Election Commission during the the 2004 and 2014 general elections.
