The German foreign intelligence agency BND tapped phone conversations made by US Secretary of State John Kerry and his predecessor Hillary Clinton, German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Saturday. If confirmed, the revelation could worsen tensions between Washington and Berlin following a row over the US spying on German chancellor Angela Merkel. The report claimed that the BND has also been spying on fellow-North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, Turkey.
State of emergency declared in Ferguson
The governor of the US state of Missouri, Jay Nixon, imposed a state of emergency and curfew in Ferguson on Saturday to contain the week-long protests and looting following the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. Nixon's announcement comes a day after the identity of the police officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown was revealed along with police allegations that Brown was involved in a robbery before he was shot, which escalated unrest in the town.
Columbia war victims join peace talks in Cuba
In an effort to put an end to the 50-year-old war in Columbia, representatives of victims' group arrived in Havana on Saturday to speak at peace talks between the Colombian government and leftist guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. The victims came together to discuss compensation for those killed and displaced in the conflict that has claimed more than 200,000 lives.
Brazil Socialist Party chooses Marina Silva to run for president
The Brazilian Socialist Party has chosen former environment minister Marina Silva as its presidential candidate, replacing Eduardo Campos, who was killed in a plane clash on Wednesday. Silva will be running against incumbent president Dilma Rousseff and opposition leader Aecio Neves in the October poll.
Two UN peacekeepers killed in suicide attack in Mali
Two United Nations peacekeepers were killed and nine injured in a suicide car bombing at a UN base in northern Mali on Saturday. UN peacekeepers took over security duties in Mali in July 2013 to ensure stability in the nation after Islamist insurgents occupied much of the north of the country.
