When Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to extend his visit to Japan by a day, newspapers fell over themselves to heap praise on his decision. No leader in recent times, they said, had ever stayed in Japan for four consecutive nights. Modi must mean business.

Japan's premier, Shinzo Abe, is also noted to be fond of Modi, and possibly the Bharatiya Janata Party. He follows only four people on Twitter: his wife, a former Tokyo governor, Modi and Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

But even as Modi makes the most of his visit to Japan – pulling children's ears and tweeting in Japanese – Twitter has not lost an opportunity to mine the visit for full comedic depth.

Since August 30, Modi Does Things, a parody Twitter account built along the lines of other similar ones, has been imitating the breathless enthusiasm of news organisations in covering Modi's every step. After all, he must be there on important work.
