Parrikar gets Defence portfolio
Twenty one new ministers were inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet on Sunday. Former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is the new defence minister. Finance Minister Jaitley has been given additional charge of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. Former Shiv Sena member Suresh Prabhu taken over from Sadananda Gowda as the country's railway minister. Gowda has been made the law and justice minister, relieving telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad from the charge.

Shiv Sena gives BJP another ultimatum, threatens to sit in opposition
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday told his party parliamentarians not to attend the swearing-in ceremony of 21 ministers into the Union Cabinet. As a part of his plan to get the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Maharashtra to accept his demands, which include the post of deputy chief minister and other key portfolios, Thackersay has threatened to sit in the opposition. "Sena will not back the BJP government in the state if it takes Nationalist Congress Party's support," he said. "We will sit in the opposition and work for the welfare of Maharashtra and its people." The NCP had offered "unconditional support" to a BJP-led government.

Gujarat makes voting in local body elections compulsory
State Governor OP Kohli has approved the Gujarat Local Authorities Laws (Amendment) Bill, which makes voting in local body elections compulsory. This latest piece of legislation also provides for 50% reservation for women in all local body elections. Gujarat is the first state to enforce compulsory voting in local body elections.

IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi 'critically injured', say Iraqi officials
Islamic State chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is thought to have been "critically injured" on Friday night during United States-led air strikes in the Iraqi city of Mosul, according to an Iraqi Interior Ministry official. The air strikes on Friday night destroyed a convoy of 10 Islamic State armed trucks and killed one of al-Baghdadi's key aides, Abdul Rahman al-Athaee. It is believed that there were at least 50 casualties from the attack. However, no representative of the American security establishment has been able to confirm whether al-Baghdadi  was injured or killed.

Carlsen beats Anand in Game 2 of World Chess Championship
Reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen outplayed his challenger Vishwanathan Anand on Sunday in 35 moves during the second game of the World Chess Championship. On Saturday, Anand and Carlsen played out a draw in their first game of the championship that is being held in Sochi, Russia.
