As the clock struck midnight and the day became November 23, a cheerful Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav cut  75-foot-long birthday cake weighing approximately 500 kg at the Mohammed Ali Jauhar University gymnasium in Rampur.

It was only one of the many cakes being cut but it was special. The giant U-shaped cake had been made by expert chefs in New Delhi. Along with this, Mulayam also cut a four-tier birthday cake alongside his son and present Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akilesh Yadav.

Cake went out to Gorakhpur and it caused quite a sensation. Samajwadi Party members surged towards the table that held it, snatching for a chunk.   Some had to push and some thrown aside.

The grand party in Rampur was thrown by Mulayam's friend, UP minister Azam Khan.

The Samajwadi Party leader said he had never experienced such an extravagant birthday party before. "I have never received such a grand welcome in my life which Azam Khan and his brigade have accorded to me," he said. In previous years, his birthday celebrations usually consisted of poetry recitations. This celebration was a departure for a man who swears by socialism.

The celebrations featured more than just take. Mulayam pottered around in an exquisite buggy imported from the United Kingdom by Azam Khan's nephew at a cost of Rs 70 lakh. The venue was decorated with flowers flown in from the Netherlands, while Sufi singers and fireworks were at hand to entertain the guests. .
