Most days, the front pages of English-language newspapers across the country feature full-page advertisements for luxury homes. They all use the same keywords: dream, exclusive, private, lavish.

These advertising fantasies seem particularly out of place in Mumbai, where buying a flat involves a lifetime of debt for middle-class residents. For the 52% of the city's population that lives in slums, these ads are almost a taunt.

To make the ads seem more realistic, we decided to run taglines from recent announcements by Mumbai real-estate firms over photos of the kind of homes that the majority of the city's residents actually live in.  Here's what you get.
