Shamitabh
Dhanush plays a speech impaired actor whose career takes off after his voice is dubbed by Amitabh Bachchan.
Balki’s latest movie after the romcom Cheeni Kum and the three-hankie drama Paa is also the advertising director-turned-filmmaker’s third collaboration with Bachchan. The veteran actor plays an unkempt, world-weary version of himself. Akshara Haasan, the younger daughter of actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, makes her acting debut.
Wild Card
Jason Statham, a genre unto himself, plays a gambling addict who becomes a security guard to feed his fix.
Based both on William Goldman’s 1985 novel Heat and the 1986 movie adaptation of the same name, Wild Card has been directed by Simon West, a veteran of such action thrillers as Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The Expendables 2. West previously directed Statham, the bare-skulled and droll British action star who burst on the scene with Snatch, in The Mechanic. The cast includes Stanley Tucci, Anne Heche and Sofia Vergara.
Mr. Turner
Timothy Spall won the Best Actor award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival for his performance as British artist JMW Turner.
Turner painted in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and is counted as one of the leading Romantic figures. Mike Leigh’s movie is set in the last few decades of Turner’s life, as the landscape artist and proto-Impressionist painted up a storm and himself into a corner with his antics.
The Boy Next Door
He’s sexy, he is extremely caring, he lives next door and he is available – surely, it’s too good to be true?
Jennifer Lopez plays Claire, a single mother who pays the price for a dalliance with the hunk who lives next door. Ryan Guzman’s Noah won’t take no for an answer, and he transforms from a good lay to a psychotic. Claire, fortunately for womankind, is no shrinking violet.
Jupiter Ascending
Jupiter finally ascends in this heavily delayed fantasy spectacle from the Wachowskis.
It’s been directed by the siblings responsible for the high-grossing The Matrix trilogy, so it’s not surprising that Jupiter Ascending is about a janitor who is unaware of her real destiny – to save the universe from a self-appointed set of rulers who are harvesting life to evolve a serum that guarantees endless youth. Mila Kunis plays Jupiter the janitor, while Channing Tatum is the interplanetary Trinity of this movie.
